2024 Quill & Compass Scholarship

In the spring of 1748, a brave 16-year-old Virginian set forth on an adventure beyond the western mountains. The young surveyor, George Washington, equipped with his compass and quill pen, embarked on journey and educational experience that would last a lifetime.

At Washington College, we believe, in the spirit of our founding patron, the best education is one that combines personal growth gained by experience, travel, and perhaps even adventure. The Quill and Compass Scholarship is for students interested in exploring history, political science, or American Studies at one of the most historic institutions in the nation. The scholarships’ name symbolizes our distinct approach to studying the past. The quill pen represents Washington College’s famed excellence in teaching writing, in particular, the literary craft of history. The compass represents the many opportunities we offer our students to explore the world beyond the college, especially the surrounding region of the Chesapeake Bay, one of America’s richest historical areas.
